Operation Siso is the campaign through which Sea Shepherd Italia protects the Mediterranean ecosystem from illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The main targets are FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices), which attract fish to then be caught with nets. The campaign also combats the use of driftnets ("Spadare"), which are banned but still illegally used today, and have been responsible for the deaths of sperm whales, tuna, swordfish, and other marine mammals over time. Through direct action at sea, Sea Shepherd volunteers locate and remove illegal FADs, abandoned nets, and fishing lines, returning a safer stretch of sea to the Mediterranean for marine wildlife. Those who wear this graphic fight against the illegal poaching for which the Mediterranean continues to pay a heavy price.
