Operation Siso is the campaign through which Sea Shepherd Italy protects the Mediterranean ecosystem from illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The main target is FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices), which attract fish to then be caught with nets. The campaign also combats the use of "driftnets," which are banned but still illegally used today, and have historically been responsible for the deaths of sperm whales, tuna, swordfish, and other marine mammals. Through direct action at sea, Sea Shepherd volunteers locate and remove illegal FADs, abandoned nets, and lines, making a stretch of the Mediterranean Sea safer for marine wildlife. Those who wear this graphic fight against the illegal poaching that the Mediterranean continues to pay a heavy price for.
